Das führte dann dazu, dass U-Boote, Flugzeugträger, andere Grossschiffe, Frachtschiffe und Eisbrecher sowie Raumflugkörper mit Kernreaktorantrieben ausgerüstet wurden, wobei diesbezüglich besonders die USA, Russland und Frankreich ins Gewicht fielen, denen dann praktisch alle anderen Atommächte folgten. Dass dabei aber von allem Anfang an grosse Gefahren durch die Nutzung der Atomenergie gegeben waren, das wurde nicht beachtet und gar lügnerisch bestritten, bis es dann eben gekracht hat, wie in Tschernobyl und Fukushima, wo durch Supergaus effective Todeszonen entstanden sind und wo auch heute und in Zukunft die Gefahr von weiteren Supergaus besteht. The ratio of pure rare Earth to processing residues is 1:2000, i.e. the extraction of one tonne of rare Earth produces 2,000 tonnes of by-products. The residues are fed into settling plants and deposited. The tailings ponds in the region, which have been in use for more than 50 years, now contain 160 million tonnes of residues and 17.5 million m³ of wastewater. The waste products contain hydrofluoric and sulphuric acid and even radioactive thorium. Naturally, this pollutes the environment to a not inconsiderable degree.

Das Verhältnis von reiner Seltene Erden zu Aufbereitungsrückständen beträgt 1: 2000, d.h., bei der Gewinnung einer Tonne Seltene Erden fallen 2000 Tonnen Nebenprodukte an. Die Rückstände werden in Absetzanlagen geleitet und abgelagert. In den seit über 50 Jahren benutzten Absetzanlagen in der Region liegen mittlerweile 160 Millionen Tonnen Rückstände und 17,5 Millionen m³ Abwasser. Die Abfallprodukte enthalten Fluss- und Schwefelsäure und sogar radioaktives Thorium. Natürlich belastet dies die Umgebung in nicht unerheblichem Mass.
