Lincoln proklamierte am 22. August 1862, dass sein höchstes Ziel die Erhaltung der Union sei, also der Zusammenschluss der amerikanischen Bundesstaaten, denn in dieser Union zwischen dem traditionellen Süden und dem modernen Norden war eine tiefe Kluft entstanden und so das Ganze schon über Jahre hinweg am Zerbröckeln. Weiter äusserte er, dass wenn er die Union retten könnte, ohne dass er einen einzigen Sklaven befreien müsste, dann würde er es tun. Dieser Ausspruch war genau gegensätzlich zu dem, warum er zum Präsidenten gewählt wurde, weil er nämlich die Abschaffung der Sklaverei in den USA proklamierte. Gegensätzlich versprach er aber schon während des Wahlkampfes im Jahr 1860, dass er die Sklaverei nicht abschaffen wolle, wobei diese jedoch in den neu entstehenden Bundesstaten nicht mehr zugelassen werden sollte. Folglich lehnten die Südstaaten Lincoln als Präsidenten ab. Also präsidialer Widerspruch und abermals Widerspruch, folglich sieben Bundesstaaten aus der Union austraten und die Konföderation gründeten, was der Auftakt zum Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg war, der von 1861–1865 dauerte. Der Süden kämpfte für sein traditionelles Gesellschaftssystem, während für den Norden kein Kriegsgrund zur Hand war, um gegen den Süden Krieg zu führen.
